There is clearly a correlation here.<\/p>\n<p>Access to knowledge, for the first time in history, is largely unimpeded for the middle class. Without effort or expense, it&#8217;s possible to become informed if you choose. For less than your cable TV bill, you can buy and read an important book every week. Share the buying with six friends and it costs far less than coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Or you can watch TV.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-809\" style=\"border:2px solid #dee5de;margin-right:15px;margin-bottom:15px;\" title=\"head in the sand\" src=\"http:\/\/briantroy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/imgres-1.jpeg\" alt=\"If I ignore it will it go away - dumb on purpose.\" width=\"198\" height=\"155\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Blaming teachers is lazy. Blaming politicians is just stupid.<\/p>\n<p>Until we value intelligence as a\u00a0society\u00a0you can&#8217;t expect children actively seek it. When intelligent well educated people of all stripes (but most notably politicians) are <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.sun-sentinel.com\/2010-10-18\/news\/fl-cpcol-tea-parties-page-1018-20101018-18_1_anti-elitist-tea-party-delaware-s-christine-o-donnell\">branded\u00a0elitist<\/a> while those for whom complete\u00a0sentences\u00a0seems to be a significant struggle are lauded as &#8220;folksy&#8221; or &#8220;accessible&#8221; you see the heart of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>When our popular culture values\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.50cent.com\/\">thuggish-ness<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justinbiebermusic.com\/\">vapid preening<\/a> over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobdylan.com\/\">substance<\/a> you see the heart of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Fixing education starts with how you regard the educated. It begins with what you demand in your entertainment, books, newspapers, politics and TV news.
